Scala dei Turchi at sunset: best time of day, best season and crowds
In summer, go to Scala dei Turchi early in the morning or late in the afternoon: in the middle of the day it is hot, there is no shade, and in extreme heat the site closes. Sunset is the time many visitors recommend, but it does not always fall before the last entry, currently 19:40. In September the sea is still warm and there were fewer visitors in 2026 than in August.
What is each month like?
Air temperatures are 1991-2021 averages for the town of Agrigento, which is on a hill, so the coast can differ. Sea temperatures come from a climate website and are indicative. Sunrise and sunset are calculated for the cliff on the 15th of each month, in local time (summer time from late March to late October). Visitor numbers are those the mayor, Alessandro Mallia, gave to the press, not figures published by the municipality.

Can you see the sunset from the rock?
It depends on the month. Compare sunset in the table with the last entry, 19:40, and remember the visit lasts 20 minutes. If the sun sets after the last entry, you see the light dropping with the last group and watch the actual sunset from the beach or the clifftop road. If it sets before, get to the entrance well in advance: first there is the walk along the beach, then the wait for your group, which goes in every 20 minutes. From October to March we don't know whether visits stay open until the last entry after dark: the municipality publishes no separate winter hours.
Pink reflections on the rock are not guaranteed: one visitor in around October 2026 was disappointed not to see them, and another notes that under a grey sky the white looks dull.
What is the best time of day in summer?
There is no shade between the car park and the rock, the way back is uphill and the white marl reflects the sun. Extreme heat is one of the reasons for closure, listed on our page on whether it is open today. The two good windows are early morning, from opening at 08:00, and late afternoon. In the morning it is cooler and you don't risk the day's entries running out (the mayor announced a cap of 1,800 in May 2026); late afternoon is when many visitors go, so don't expect to be alone.
September, October and winter
September and October bring a warm sea and average highs below 30 °C (86 °F) in Agrigento, but more rain, and bad weather triggers automatic closures. In winter the sea drops below 20 °C (68 °F): it is a season for looking, not swimming. One review from around January 2026 describes a much quieter site, another from a couple of years ago warns that bars and restaurants were closed, and the Temple Tour Bus does not run, so without a car read how to get to Scala dei Turchi. Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Scala dei Turchi?
It depends on what you want. For swimming, the sea averages above 21 °C (70 °F) from June to October according to a climate website, and in September 2026 the mayor counted fewer visitors than in August. One 2025 review recommends May to June and September to October, avoiding weekends.
What time is sunset at Scala dei Turchi?
Around 20:30 on 15 June, 19:16 on 15 September and 16:51 on 15 December. Compare it with the last entry, currently 19:40: when the sun sets later, you watch the sunset from the beach or from above, not from the rock.
Is Scala dei Turchi crowded in August?
It is busy: according to the mayor there were 33,800 visitors in August 2026, about seven in ten from abroad, against 19,660 in July and 21,340 in September up to the 29th. In high season arrive at opening, when it is cooler and there is no risk of the daily cap of 1,800 entries announced by the mayor being reached.
Can you visit Scala dei Turchi in winter?
Probably, but it is not confirmed: the municipality publishes no separate winter hours, and in 2026 the mayor was aiming for 200,000 visitors by Christmas, which suggests it stays open in autumn. Winter is wetter, though: Agrigento averages 6 to 8 rainy days a month from November to February, and the site closes in the rain. The Temple Tour Bus from Agrigento does not run in the winter months.
What is the water temperature in September and October?
On average about 24 °C (75 °F) in September and 22 °C (72 °F) in October, according to a climate website. Rain picks up in October, with about 6 rainy days on average.
