Scala dei Turchi with a dog: rules, beach, heat and nearby reserves
At Scala dei Turchi no published rule bans dogs, and none allows them: the municipality of Realmonte's page, the 2025 order that governs the visit and the Coast Guard's 2026 bathing order say nothing about them, and nor do visitor reviews. Our advice is to write to the municipality before you go and, in summer, to avoid the hot hours: there is no shade between the car park and the rock. Below you will find what to know about the marl, the beach, turtle nests and the nearby reserves.
What do the rules say about dogs?
The rules for the visit are in two texts: the municipality's order of 8 May 2025, with the map of the area you may visit, and the municipality's "My Scala dei Turchi" page, updated in August 2026. Neither mentions dogs. Nor does the 2026 bathing safety order of the Porto Empedocle Coast Guard, which applies to the whole stretch of coast it covers.
One document is still worth asking about: the municipality of Realmonte's bathing order, which governs its beaches (in 2025 it was no. 05 of 16 April). If there is a rule on dogs on the beach, that is where it will be.
To ask, the municipality has a switchboard, +39 0922 810811, and the email address its page uses for bookings, settore5.realmonte@gmail.com. Give the date of your visit and the size of your dog, and ask two separate questions: whether the dog can go onto the rock, and whether it can stay on the beach.
On the rock: what should you bear in mind?
With a ticket you walk on the marl only on the lower part of the headland, along a set route, for 20 minutes. Visitors go in groups of 50 people every 20 minutes, and in summer the rock can be crowded. If your dog is let in:
- Short lead. One visitor reports that there are no safety barriers and that you could fall into the sea; the smooth marl is slippery when damp or salty.
- No digging. Marl is a soft rock, and the municipality forbids damaging it or taking pieces away.
- Stay on the route. The upper part and the best-known steps are closed because the cliff collapses, and the Coast Guard's order bans stopping at the foot of the cliffs, within 10 metres of the base.
If you would rather not go down, you can see the Scala from above at the viewpoints along the SP 68 road, described in our guide to photos and viewpoints. The other rules are in our guide to the visiting rules.
Is the heat a problem?
In summer, yes. 2026 reviews say there is no shade between the car park and the rock and that the way back is uphill in the sun; the white marl reflects the light. Since June 2026 the municipality has put up a few gazebos, and no source mentions drinking fountains: bring water and a bowl for your dog.
In Agrigento town the average high in July and August is about 31 °C. The site itself stops for heat and bad weather. The site closes in rain, under a yellow or higher weather alert, in a fresh wind or stronger, in a choppy (slight) sea or rougher, in heat above 34-35 °C (sometimes only in the middle of the day), after an earthquake above magnitude 2.5, or when the municipal civil protection office judges it necessary. In July 2026 the municipality closed the visit from 11 am to 6 pm on three heatwave days. With a dog, keep to the same hours: from opening at 08:00 until mid-morning, or after 6 pm. In spring and autumn the problem is smaller: the months are compared in our guide on the best time to visit.
What about the beach below the cliff?
You reach the beach on foot from one of the four access points listed by the municipality: the Pizzeria "Scala dei Turchi", the "Acanthus" beach club, the White bar-Lounge beach and the Majata beach club. Three of them are a beach club and two bars by the sea: if you want to sit under an umbrella with your dog, ask the manager. Some visitors report seaweed and litter on the sand, and towards the cliff there are rocks close to the shore. Keep poo bags in your pocket: the municipality asks visitors to take their rubbish back with them.
What the beach is like and where you can swim is covered in our guide to the beach at Scala dei Turchi.
Where should you watch out for wildlife?
Scala dei Turchi is a site in the European Natura 2000 network, which protects dunes, junipers and wild orchids: keep your dog on the paths and out of the dune vegetation.
Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) nest on this coast. In 2025, according to Balarm reporting the Mareamico association, there was a nest at Lido Majata, close to the Scala; in 2024 a nest at Lido Kaeso in Realmonte produced 117 hatchlings, according to BlogSicilia. Egg-laying recorded here runs from late May to late July, and according to WWF the eggs hatch after about 50-60 days. If you see a fenced nest, keep your dog away; if you find a turtle or its tracks, move away, don't shine lights on it and tell the Coast Guard or WWF. More in our guide to nature and turtles.
Can you go to the nearby reserves and beaches?
- Torre Salsa. The reserve's regulations, from 2000, do not mention dogs. They do ban disturbing wildlife and taking nests or eggs; in zone A they ban leaving the marked paths, camping and lighting fires. Birds of prey nest on the cliffs and the Pantano wetland hosts water birds. According to a 2021 source there are no bars in the reserve: bring water for you and your dog. Before you go, ask WWF, which runs it: +39 0922 818220, torresalsa@wwf.it.
- Lido Rossello and Punta Grande. These are the Realmonte beaches just west and east of the Scala. For dogs, the same question about the bathing order applies.
- Eraclea Minoa and Capo Bianco. Capo Bianco is in the same Natura 2000 site as Torre Salsa, which lists the loggerhead turtle among the species that breed there. There are no published rules on dogs: ask the municipality of Cattolica Eraclea.
What to bring for your dog?
- A short lead for the rock and the beach.
- Water and a bowl: no source mentions drinking fountains along the route.
- Poo bags, to take back with you.
- The municipality's reply, if you have it by email: it helps at the gate.
Frequently asked questions
Can you bring dogs to Scala dei Turchi?

Can a dog walk on the marl at Scala dei Turchi?
No rule covers it. On the rock you may only walk on the lower part, along a set route, and the municipality forbids damaging the marl: if your dog is let in at the gate, keep it on a short lead and away from the edge, where one visitor reports there are no barriers.
Are dogs allowed on the beach at Lido Rossello or Punta Grande?
There is no published rule on dogs for these beaches. If there is one, it is in the municipality of Realmonte's bathing order (in 2025 it was no. 05 of 16 April): ask the municipality for it, and at private beach clubs ask the manager.
Are dogs allowed in the Torre Salsa reserve?
