Scala dei Turchi beach: can you swim there, and which beaches are nearby

Whether you can swim at Scala dei Turchi depends on the stretch, and the sources are not clear: we did not find the current municipal order on bathing below the cliff, where in 2020 the mayor banned swimming in areas at risk of rockfalls. Diving from the cliff is banned, and so is stopping at its foot. From the beach you can see and photograph the Scala for free, and the water in the area is rated excellent. For a quieter beach day, there are other beaches a few kilometres along the Agrigento coast.

What is the beach below the cliff like?

The beach runs along the foot of the white cliff. You can only get there on foot: the municipality lists four access points, the Pizzeria "Scala dei Turchi", the "Acanthus" beach club, the White bar-Lounge beach and the Majata beach club. From the upper car parks you go down a steep flight of steps, or take a paid Apecar (a small three-wheeled vehicle) to the start of the beach; the ways down are described in our guide on how to get to Scala dei Turchi.

What visitors report:

  • Seabed. Sand at the start, where the water is very shallow; towards the cliff there are rocks close to the shore and the seabed drops quickly. Several visitors recommend water shoes.
  • Facilities. Along the way down and on the beach there are a bar, kiosks and lidos, the Italian beach clubs where you rent an umbrella and sunbeds. Reviews from 2026 disagree on prices: one mentions €50 for two sunbeds, another calls them fair.
  • Shade. 2026 reviews say there is none between the rock and the car park, nor on the cliff. Since June 2026 the municipality has put up a few gazebos.
  • Cleanliness. Seven reviews from around April to September 2026 mention seaweed, litter or dirt along the route; two others speak well of it, one calling it a long, beautiful beach.

From the beach the Scala is free to see and photograph; the €6 ticket is for walking on the rock, as explained on our page on tickets and opening hours.

Where can you swim?

The 2026 bathing safety order of the Porto Empedocle Coast Guard, valid for the whole coastline it covers, bans diving from cliffs and stopping within 10 metres of the foot of a cliff or of fallen material. The municipal order that regulates the visit also excludes the water west of the headland. Below the Scala there was also a 2020 swimming ban in the stretches at risk of rockfalls: we don't know if it is still in force. For 2025 a local source lists the stretch among the no-swimming zones, but we have not read the municipal order.

In practice: if you swim, do it from the sandy stretch and well away from the cliff face, and don't climb onto the marl from the sea. All the rules are on our page on the visiting rules.

Water quality. The Portale Acque, the Italian Ministry of Health's bathing water portal, has no sampling point called "Scala dei Turchi": the cliff is at the western edge of the "Punta Grande" bathing water, next to "Lido Rossello". Both are rated excellent, with six samples in 2026 all within limits, the last on 15 September; the bathing season runs from 1 May to 31 October. The portal measures microbiological quality: it does not say where swimming is allowed or safe. No beach in the area has a 2026 Blue Flag: in the province of Agrigento only Menfi does.

Can you go with children?

Yes, with some care. The way down is a steep staircase, or about 1 km of sand from the Majata beach club according to a 2024 guide; where there is sand the water is shallow, near the cliff there are rocks and the seabed drops quickly; on the rock, one visitor says there are no safety barriers. In 2026, according to two summer reviews, children over 12 pay for the ticket. The ways down compared, the heat, pushchairs and nearby beaches are in our guide to Scala dei Turchi with kids.

Which beaches are nearby?

From east to west, these beaches are a few minutes to just over half an hour by car. Each has its own page; distances are in the table below.

  • Punta Grande. Realmonte's beach area just east of the Scala. Its bathing water starts next to the cliff and is rated excellent in 2026.
  • Lido Rossello. To the west; on maps it is the beach of Capo Rossello. A route published by a user walks to the Scala along the road with the viewpoints; no official source says whether the passage along the shore is allowed.
  • Capo Rossello. The headland with the lighthouse, west of Lido Rossello beach, made of the same marl: see our guide to the geology.
  • Giallonardo. A beach in the municipality of Realmonte, further west along the coast; its water is rated excellent in 2026.
  • Siculiana Marina. The seaside village of Siculiana; all of Siculiana's bathing waters are excellent in 2026.
  • Torre Salsa. The nature reserve run by WWF, with about 6 km of coast between cliffs, dunes and sandy beaches. According to a 2021 source there are no bars or beach clubs.
  • Eraclea Minoa. Beach and archaeological area, near the pale cliff of Capo Bianco.

If you are looking for other white cliffs without a ticket, one review from around September 2026 suggests Capo Bianco, Torre Salsa and Punta Bianca.

What should you do if you see a sea turtle?

Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) nest on this coast: in 2025, according to the Palermo news site Balarm, citing the association Mareamico, a turtle laid eggs at Lido Majata, near the Scala. If you see a turtle or its tracks, don't disturb it, don't shine lights at it, alert the Coast Guard or WWF and respect fenced-off nests. More on our page on nature and turtles.
