Photographing Scala dei Turchi: best spots, light and drone rules

The best photos of Scala dei Turchi are free: from above, on the clifftop road between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, and from below, on the beach, where you see the whole wall. With a ticket you can photograph the marl up close, but only on the lower part and for 20 minutes. Many visitors recommend sunset; under a grey sky the white loses much of its glow.

Viewpoints and light

In 2016 FAI, the Italian heritage trust, announced a new viewpoint on the clifftop road, and in 2024 panels explaining the geology were installed in the viewpoint area along the SP 68. Stay well back from the edge: the Coast Guard bans standing within 10 metres of the top of sheer cliffs. From the east, Punta Grande shows the cliff in the background, and from the sea a boat gives you the whole face.

At sunset the light is what most visitors come for; in some months the sun sets after the last entry, so you photograph it from the beach or from above. Sunset times by month are in our guide on the best time to visit.

Tripods, drones and permits

The marl is soft, and the municipality asks you not to rest photo or video equipment on it, so no tripod on the rock. We found no specific municipal drone ban, but in the bathing season the Porto Empedocle Coast Guard bans flights below 300 metres within 1,000 metres of the coast "with any type of aircraft" without permission, and in 2025 the mayor objected to drone filming done out of hours without authorisation. Ask the Coast Guard or ENAC and check D-Flight before flying. Professional shoots required the Pass Verde in 2024 and 2025, and the press still mentions it in 2026; the area can be closed to the public while they take place.

The full section on viewpoints, light and drones is in our complete guide to Scala dei Turchi; the rules on the rock are on our page on the visiting rules.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best photo spot at Scala dei Turchi?

Without a ticket, from above on the clifftop road between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, and from below on the beach, where you see the whole wall. With a ticket you photograph the marl up close, but only on the lower part and for 20 minutes.

Can you fly a drone at Scala dei Turchi?

We found no specific municipal ban, but in summer the Coast Guard order bans low flights over beaches and sea without permission. Whether that covers drones is not confirmed: ask the Coast Guard or ENAC, the Italian aviation authority, and check the zones on D-Flight, the Italian drone-zone map.

Do you need a permit for a photo shoot?

For professional filming and advertising shoots the municipality of Realmonte required the Pass Verde, which cost €1,000 a day in 2024 and 2025. One newspaper still mentions it in 2026, but the municipality does not publish the fee: ask its offices directly.

Is there a viewpoint above Scala dei Turchi?

Yes: in 2016 the Italian heritage trust FAI announced a new viewpoint on the clifftop road between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, and one visitor describes two lay-bys on the SP 68 with a clear view of the cliff. We have not verified which one is the FAI viewpoint.
