Eraclea Minoa beach: Capo Bianco, the Greek theatre and how to get there
Archaeological site 21 km from the Scala as the crow flies
Eraclea Minoa beach is a long sandy bay in the municipality of Cattolica Eraclea, about 27 km by road from Scala dei Turchi, with the white cliff of Capo Bianco to the west. Above the beach is the archaeological site of the ancient Greek city, with its theatre facing the sea. The water is rated excellent, and the archaeological site is open every day from 09:00, with a ticket of €6 (€3 reduced).
Where is it and how do you get there?
On the coast of the province of Agrigento, west of Scala dei Turchi: 20.6 km to the archaeological site as the crow flies, about 26.6 km (16.5 miles) by road, a good half hour by car according to the OSRM routing service on OpenStreetMap data, which does not count traffic or parking. On the same coast, about 5 km towards the Scala as the crow flies, is the Torre Salsa nature reserve.
We have no verified route from the Scala, and no information on car parks or rates near the beach: set your satnav for the archaeological site and ask on arrival.
What are the beach and the water like?
From above, as in the January 2015 photo at the top, you see a long sandy beach following the curve of the bay. The European fact sheet of the Natura 2000 site that includes this coast (Natura 2000 is the EU network of protected areas) speaks of some of the most intact sandy beaches in Sicily, and of lines of dunes.
According to the Portale Acque, the Italian Ministry of Health's bathing water portal, all the bathing waters of Cattolica Eraclea are rated excellent in 2026, with the last sample on 21 September: they are called Camping, 200 m to the right of the Camping, and the mouth of the Platani river. The portal does not say which one matches each stretch of the beach. We have no verified information on beach clubs, umbrellas or bars.
What should you know about Capo Bianco?
Capo Bianco is the pale cliff west of the archaeological site, about a kilometre away as the crow flies. According to Wikipedia it is made of clayey marl rich in microfossils, you reach it from the beach in about five minutes on foot, and the rock often crumbles into small boulders: keep away from the base of the cliff.
For geologists, Eraclea Minoa is where the Pliocene begins: near the archaeological site is the world reference point for the start of that period, ratified in 2000, where the white Trubi marl rests on the brown sands of the Arenazzolo in a cliff about 30 metres high. It is the same family of rocks as Scala dei Turchi: the story is in our guide to the geology of Scala dei Turchi.
What can you see at the archaeological site?
Eraclea Minoa was founded by settlers from Selinunte in the 6th century BC, then came under Akragas (ancient Agrigento) and, from the end of the 5th century BC, under Carthage; the Romans resettled it and the city was abandoned from the 1st century BC. That is the account of the Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park, which runs the site. You can see a circuit of walls about 6 km long, the theatre facing the sea with its seating carved from blocks of marl, the necropolis, the town and the antiquarium (a small museum) at the entrance. Sources disagree on the date of the theatre: the Park places it in the 4th century BC, Wikipedia at the end of the 5th.
Opening times and tickets. Every day: until 24 October 2026 from 09:00 to 17:30 (last entry 17:00); from 25 October 2026 until March from 09:00 to 16:30 (last entry 16:00). The hours cover both the archaeological area and the Antiquarium. A ticket costs €6 full price and €3 reduced. Where to buy: online on CoopCulture or at the ticket office. In 2020 the Park announced works, including new facilities and a path to a viewpoint with a way down to the beach: we don't know what has been completed.
Which rules apply?
- Protected area. The coast between the mouth of the Magazzolo, the mouth of the Platani, Capo Bianco and Torre Salsa is a Natura 2000 site. Near Eraclea Minoa a patch of juniper and wild olive survives, and at the mouth of the Platani there is a large reed bed. We found no sources on the rules of the Platani mouth reserve.
- Turtles. The Natura 2000 fact sheet lists loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) among the species that breed at this site. If you see a turtle or a fenced-off nest, follow our guide to nature and turtles.
- Cliff. Don't stop below Capo Bianco: the rock crumbles.
- Dogs. We found no rules.
When should you go?
For swimming, the bathing season is what counts: for the waters of Realmonte the Portale Acque gives 1 May to 31 October 2026; for Cattolica Eraclea we did not find the dates. In spring and autumn this coast is a stopover for many migratory birds, according to the Natura 2000 fact sheet. For the archaeological site, what counts is the opening time, which changes with the season: both periods are in the section on the archaeological site.
How do you plan the day?
Eraclea Minoa combines well with Torre Salsa and Siculiana Marina, on the same coast towards the Scala. For the archaeological site, watch the last entry, which comes earlier as the days get shorter; bring what you need for the beach until you know what facilities there are, and look at Capo Bianco from a safe distance.
