From Agrigento to Scala dei Turchi: distance, bus and a day with the Valley of the Temples

From central Agrigento to Scala dei Turchi it is about 15 km (9 miles) by road, roughly 25 minutes by car; from the Valley of the Temples, about 13 km (8 miles), around 20 minutes. Without a car, in the warmer months, line B of the Temple Tour Bus crosses the Valley and continues to the Scala; for taxis and private drivers we found no reliable fares. Both visits fit in one day: the temples in the morning, the cliff in the afternoon.

How far is Scala dei Turchi from Agrigento?

The cliff is not in Agrigento but in the municipality of Realmonte, on the coast west of the city. The distances below are calculated from OpenStreetMap data; the times assume no traffic and no time spent looking for parking.

From As the crow flies By road By car
Agrigento, cathedral 9.6 km 14.9 km (9 miles) about 24 minutes
Valley of the Temples, Temple of Concordia 10.6 km 13 km (8 miles) about 20 minutes
San Leone 10 km 14.3 km (9 miles) about 21 minutes

Travel guides often say about 16 km from Agrigento: the difference depends on your starting point in town. By car you take the SS 115 towards Porto Empedocle and then the road along the beaches; the route is described in our guide on how to get to Scala dei Turchi. On arrival the municipality lists only paid car parks, with different prices: see where to park.

Is there a bus from Agrigento?

Yes, but not all year. The direct link is the Temple Tour Bus, Agrigento's tourist bus run by the company TUA; we found no Agrigento city bus lines that reach the cliff.

Line B leaves from Piazzale Aldo Moro, stops in Piazza Marconi outside the station, crosses the Valley of the Temples (stops at the Temple of Juno and at Porta V, near the Kolymbethra garden), passes Pirandello's birthplace and the Tower of Charles V in Porto Empedocle, and ends at the "Scala dei Turchi" stop. In the 2026 timetable there are five services a day to the Scala, and the trip from Piazzale Aldo Moro takes about an hour. Up-to-date times are on the operator's website: check them the day before.

Before you rely on it:

  • it does not run on Mondays, in the winter months or in bad weather;
  • the October 2026 calendar on the official site lists dates that fall on Mondays this year, probably copied from a previous year: for autumn, ask the operator to confirm;
  • a September 2026 notice from the operator, about a route called "Linea Blue", says the service is "not Hop On Hop Off": if you plan to get off at the temples and catch a later bus to the Scala, ask first whether that is allowed;
  • the published prices differ between pages of the site and the 2025 train-plus-bus package from Trenitalia, which is not confirmed for 2026.

Don't rely on the last afternoon bus without a plan B.

Lumia buses link Agrigento and Realmonte all year (the current timetable runs until 9 June 2027), with more services on weekdays and one on public holidays; according to the timetable they do not run on New Year's Day, Easter, 15 August or Christmas. They stop in the village or on the main road ("Via Rina" and "Bar La Sosta Durrueli"), not at the cliff, and no source says how far you walk from there.

Realmonte shuttle. According to a single source, Sicilia Target, in summer 2026 the municipality of Realmonte ran a summer town bus from the village, not from Agrigento, which also stopped at the Scala, with six services a day in each direction. Stops and caveats are on our page on Realmonte.

By train. If you arrive at Agrigento Centrale, line B stops right outside the station.

How much is a taxi?

We don't know: we found no published fares for taxis or private drivers with car (called NCC in Italy) between Agrigento and the Scala, nor recent prices we could trust. Some campervan areas near the cliff offer paid transfers to Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples, according to 2025 reviews that give no prices. Agree the price before you get in, and arrange the return at the same time.

How to combine the Valley of the Temples and Scala dei Turchi in one day

It works, and the distance is short. We suggest the temples in the morning and the Scala in the afternoon, for three reasons:

  • the Temple Tour Bus runs in that order: first the Valley, then Porto Empedocle, then the Scala;
  • there is no shade at the Scala, and in extreme heat the municipality closes the site, sometimes only in the middle of the day: in July 2026 it was closed from 11:00 to 18:00 on three days;
  • many visitors recommend the Scala in the late afternoon and at sunset.

Keep an eye, though, on the last entry to the cliff, which the municipality gives as 19:40, and on sunset, which comes early from October to February: the month-by-month table is in our guide on the best time to visit.

How much time to allow at the Scala. The visit on the rock lasts 20 minutes, but everything else takes longer: finding a parking space, walking down to the beach, 10 to 20 minutes on the sand each way (uphill on the way back) and waiting for your slot, which starts every 20 minutes. Price, payment and exemptions are on our page on tickets and opening hours.

The temples. Tickets, hours, the Kolymbethra garden and the ticket offices are on our page on the Valley of the Temples, with the date we checked them, because they change often.

In between. Line B also stops in Porto Empedocle and at Pirandello's birthplace in the Caos area: if you are interested in Camilleri, Inspector Montalbano and Pirandello, the stop is described in our guide on Camilleri, Pirandello and the films.

On the morning itself. The Scala also closes in rain, strong wind and choppy or rougher sea: before you set off, check whether it is open today.

What about organised tours?

Booking sites sell day tours from Palermo, Catania and Cefalù that combine the Valley and the Scala. According to their descriptions, checked in October 2026, some (for example from Palermo) do not include the Valley ticket and only stop at the Scala for about 20 minutes of photos; others (for example from Catania) include the ticket and a swimming stop. Before booking, ask three things: whether the Valley ticket is included, how long you stay at the Scala, and whether you go onto the rock or only see it from the beach and from above.

Can you see Scala dei Turchi by boat?

Yes. From the sea you see the cliff head-on, from the base to the top, including the upper part that is closed on foot. Boat trips leave mainly from two places:

  • San Leone, Agrigento's seaside district, 10 km as the crow flies from the Scala: short trips of about an hour and a half and half-days by boat or rigid inflatable; one booking platform gives the marina as the boarding point.
  • Porto Empedocle, the closer of the two (the Tower of Charles V is 4.8 km as the crow flies): operators list trips of an hour and a half and longer outings with an aperitif.

Prices vary a lot by operator, type of boat and duration, so compare what each trip includes. Some trips stop for a swim, and one goes further west to Giallonardo beach. Don't expect to land on the rock from the sea: you can only go onto the cliff through the entrance on the beach, the water west of the headland is excluded from the visiting area, and the Coast Guard bans jumping or diving from the cliffs.

Before booking, ask about the current price and what it includes, where you board, how long you actually stay in front of the Scala, the type of boat and how many people are on board, and what happens if the sea is rough. If you want sunset light, ask when the boat passes the cliff: we found no trips explicitly sold as sunset tours. More details are on our short page on Scala dei Turchi boat tours.

If you want to stay more than a day, the areas to stay between Agrigento and Realmonte are in our guide on where to stay and eat.
